Houjie makes shoes. The town holds more than 5,200 footwear enterprises employing around 100,000 people, and hosts over 800 international buyers sourcing from it. More than ten specialised shoe-material markets serve that industry, which is what turns a manufacturing town into a place worth visiting as a buyer.

The trading heart of it is in Liaoxia Village, anchored by the Hongyun Footwear Materials and Shoe Industry Plaza — promoted locally as the world's largest one-stop market for leather and footwear materials. Whether or not that superlative holds, the practical point is real: almost every component a shoe needs can be sourced within the same complex.

What the market sells

The materials trade is the bulk of it. Leather and synthetic uppers, linings, insoles, midsoles and outsoles in rubber, EVA, TPR and PU; heels, shanks, toe puffs and counters; laces, eyelets, buckles and decorative hardware; adhesives, finishes and packaging. A designer can specify an entire shoe from stock components held in the plaza.

Alongside it sits finished footwear across the full range — dress shoes, casual, sneakers, sandals, boots and work footwear — much of it OEM and export-grade production made for international brands in the same town.

The third category, and one that surprises visitors, is machinery: cutting presses, lasting machines, stitching equipment and sole-attaching lines are traded here too, because the customers are the factories next door.

Materials, finished shoes and the machinery to make them, all in the same town.

Prices, minimums and how buying works

Footwear minimums are higher than apparel, and the reason is tooling. Every sole design needs a mould, and moulds are made per size. A custom outsole therefore carries a tooling cost and a production minimum that typically starts in the high hundreds or low thousands of pairs per style.

Using an existing stock sole changes the arithmetic completely — minimums fall to a few hundred pairs and there is no tooling charge. For a first production run this is almost always the right answer, and most factories here hold a large library of existing sole moulds to choose from.

Fit is the other thing to get right early. Last shape decides fit, and lasts differ between Chinese, European and North American sizing conventions. Confirm which last system a factory is working to, and approve a physical fit sample in your target size before anything is graded.

Planning a visit

Houjie is in central Dongguan, roughly an hour from Guangzhou and 50 minutes from Shenzhen, close to the Dongguan Houjie exhibition district. Most buyers arrive by car; the markets and factories are spread across the town rather than concentrated on one street.

Come with a reference shoe and a target price. As with knitwear in Dalang, this is a working town rather than a browsing one, and the value of a visit comes from the factory appointments you arrange around it.

Frequently asked questions

What is the minimum order for custom shoes?

With a custom sole, typically high hundreds to low thousands of pairs per style, plus tooling. Using an existing stock sole brings that down to a few hundred pairs with no mould charge.

Can I buy shoe materials without ordering production?

Yes. The shoe-material markets sell to anyone — uppers, soles, hardware, adhesives and packaging are all traded independently of the factories.

Is Houjie better than the shoe market in Guangzhou?

They serve different needs. Guangzhou's Zhan Xi Lu is a trading market for finished shoes at low minimums; Houjie is a manufacturing town, better for materials and for production.
