Liwan Plaza Jewellery Market
Guangzhou's jewellery market: six floors and more than 1,500 stores of crystals, pearls, beads, silver, jade and the findings to assemble them, on Shangxiajiu in old Liwan.

Liwan Plaza is where Guangzhou's jewellery and beading trade concentrates. The complex sits on Dexing Road at the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street in old Liwan, and its six floors hold more than 1,500 stores — enough that it is generally referred to simply as the Guangzhou jewellery market.
It serves two trades at once. One is finished fashion jewellery bought by the dozen for resale. The other, and the reason designers come here, is components: the beads, stones, pearls, chain, clasps and findings from which jewellery is assembled. Both sit in the same building, often on the same floor.
What the market sells
Natural and synthetic gemstones, crystal and glass beads, freshwater and cultured pearls, jade and hardstone, silver and silver-plated jewellery, and fashion jewellery in alloy, steel and copper. The depth on beads and pearls in particular is exceptional — a single floor can hold thousands of sizes, grades and colours of one material.
Findings and tools trade alongside them: chain by the metre, clasps, jump rings, ear wires, headpins, wire, cord, display stands and packaging. For a designer or a small jewellery brand, that means a complete bill of materials can be assembled in an afternoon.
Because Shangxiajiu is also a retail street, the ground floors lean toward retail and tourist trade; the wholesale and component business is stronger on the upper floors and in the units set back from the street frontage.
Prices, minimums and how buying works
Components sell by the strand, the bag or the hundred; finished pieces by the dozen. Minimums are low across the board, which is what makes Liwan Plaza workable for a designer sampling as well as for a retailer stocking up.
For anything worn against skin and sold into the EU, UK or similar markets, ask about nickel and lead content. Regulations on nickel release in particular are enforced, and a supplier who cannot answer the question is not one to build a range on. Plating thickness is the other quiet variable in fashion jewellery — cheap plating looks identical on day one and very different after a month.
Pearls and gemstones are graded by eye, and the grading is negotiable in a way that fabric weight is not. Buy strands in daylight if you can, compare several suppliers on the same size and grade, and expect the price to move with your quantity.
Planning a visit
Changshou Lu station on Metro Line 1 exits onto the Shangxiajiu pedestrian street a few minutes from the plaza; Huangsha on Lines 1 and 6 is also close. Trading runs roughly 09:30 to 18:30.
It sits within walking distance of Shisanhang, which makes the two an easy pairing: garments in the morning, accessories to go with them in the afternoon.
Frequently asked questions
Is Liwan Plaza a wholesale or retail market?
Both. The street-facing ground floors lean retail; the upper floors and set-back units are where the wholesale and component trade is.
Can I buy jewellery components rather than finished pieces?
Yes — beads, pearls, stones, chain, clasps and findings are a core part of the market, sold by the strand, bag or hundred.
What should I check before buying fashion jewellery here?
Nickel and lead content for regulated markets, and plating thickness. Both are the difference between a range that lasts and one that generates returns.
