Zhongda Fabric Market

Zhongda is a general fabric market, which in practice means that almost anything woven or knitted in China can be found here within a morning's walk. Individual buildings specialise loosely — one concentrates on knits, another on lining and interlining, a third on lace and embroidered panels — but the boundaries are soft and most traders will source outside their own speciality if the order justifies it.

The core of the trade is garment fabric bought by the roll: cotton and cotton blends, polyester, viscose, denim, jersey and interlock knits, suiting and shirting wovens. Around that sits everything a garment needs besides the shell fabric — lining, fusible interlining, elastic, tape, ribbon, zips, buttons and thread. Several buildings hold specialty and technical textiles: waterproof and breathable membranes, high-visibility fabrics, flame-retardant cloth and performance knits.

The other thing Zhongda sells, which buyers routinely overlook, is processing. A large share of vendors offer printing, dyeing, embroidery and finishing alongside the raw cloth. Fabric bought in the morning can be cut, printed and shipped the same day. For sampling and short runs that compresses a two-week loop into an afternoon.

Zhongda is a wholesale market that tolerates small buyers. Most shops will cut a metre or two as a sample, usually at a premium over the roll price, and will quote a real wholesale number once you are talking in the tens of metres. A full roll is typically 30 to 50 metres depending on the construction; that is the unit prices are actually built around.

Quoted prices move with quantity, payment terms and how specific your requirements are. A stock fabric held in the shop is cheapest. The same construction in a colour that has to be dyed to order costs more and carries a real minimum — commonly 300 to 500 metres per colour, sometimes higher for difficult shades. Custom prints sit somewhere in between, with the minimum driven by the print method rather than the cloth.

Two habits save money and rework here. First, buy a cutting of anything you are serious about and wash it three times before committing — shrinkage and colour bleed are the two failures that actually reach the customer. Second, get the composition and weight written down, in grams per square metre, on whatever the vendor gives you. A verbal "it's cotton" and a written 180gsm 95/5 cotton-elastane single jersey are very different commitments.

Zhongshan University station on Metro Line 2 puts you about 200 metres from the heart of the market; Zhongda station on Line 8 (exits A and B) reaches the district directly. Either is far more reliable than driving — the service roads around the market are choked with delivery traffic most of the day.

Trading runs roughly 10:00 to 19:00, with individual shops keeping their own hours, and the whole district closes for Chinese New Year. Mornings are calmer and vendors have more patience for a buyer who is still comparing. Wear shoes you can stand in for six hours, and assume you will walk several kilometres without meaning to.
